Wunkar Silo

The outstanding landmark of the Wunkar district is the silo.

Since cereal production first began in the late-1890s, labourers had filled and sewn bags of grain, then undertaken the backbreaking work of lumping the bags from wheat stacks to rail wagons. Local bulk handling of grain changed this when the three-cell, 220,000-bushel (6000 tonnes) capacity silo was opened on 4 November 1960, by the Hon Tom Stott MP, CBE, and local Basil Golding. An official dinner and ball in the Wunkar Hall followed. Mr Stott, a passionate supporter of Mallee farming and The South Australian Co-operative of Bulk Handling (SACBH), had earlier announced construction of silos at Pinnaroo (serving the Southern Mallee) and Wunkar (the Northern Mallee). The latter became one of the most efficient grain-receival depots in South Australia. Ralph May, of Pata, delivered the first load of cereal on 17 November 1960, and except for the 1972 and 1982 droughts (when no grain was received) the silo was kept full. As road transport improved, the SACBH began reducing.
